As part of Matla Mine’s social and labour plans (SLPs), a R1,8-million waste removal truck was donated to the municipality, which had previously identified the vehicle as an urgent requirement for service delivery.
Matla Mine also donated a fire-fighting trailer to the local farming community of Ga-Nala. The trailer was built by CTFSS Apprentice Trading Enterprise cc, a business initiated by Matla in 2009. The business aims to equip community members with technical boiler making skills and in doing so, create employment opportunities and alleviate poverty.
The members have been allocated space at the mine’s workshop and are employed on various projects at the mine.
“I congratulate Thabile Khumalo and Pepsy Dlamini of our Community Development Department for ensuring the delivery of equipment so urgently required by the local municipality,” said Mr Danie Stapelberg, Matla mine manager.

Cllr Salome Sithole, Executive Mayor, thanked Matla for making the tangible contribution to the community. She encouraged Exxaro and other companies whose employees live in the area, to do even more as there were still many unmet needs in the community.
“By directly responding to the need and making use of members of another business that we helped to establish some time ago, we are living our company value of being empowered to grow and contribute, and to our vision of powering possibility,” added Mr Stapelberg.
After the handover ceremony, municipal delegates donned their personal protective equipment and were treated to an excursion underground at Matla’s Mine 3 shaft to get a first-hand experience of the coal mining environment.
