Every drop counts

With the cold season approaching, one of the basic needs we rely heavily upon is water.

We use it in almost everything. We need water to cook, bath, wash etc. In comparison to last year’s figures both the dam levels and rainfall chances have declined. There is a possibility that we could have a shortage of water and as a result community members are advised to save water.

Mr Dries Bothma gathers his own rainfall and from his calculator, it shows that from January 2014 to March 2014 there was 516mm of rainfall and in 2015 from January to March, 240mm of rainfall was recorded.
Project manager and drafting office manager from the SCIP Engineering Group Ronnie Pieterse said in 2014 Witbank Dam was 99.4 % full, Middelburg Dam was at 101.45 % and Loskop Dam was at 94.35%. In 2015 Witbank Dam was at 86.34 %, Middelburg Dam 94.62 % and Loskop Dam was 95.52% full.

Judging from the above statistics not much rain can be expected this year.
Emalahleni Municipality says there is nothing to be worried about, “we are safe with regard to our water level in our dam and we are confident that there won’t be a water shortage during the winter season,” said Lebo Mofokeng, Manager Communications of Emalahleni Local Municipality.

To be not caught off guard, apply the following tips on how to save water:

  • Fix a dripping tap in the kitchen, bathroom or outside. A dripping tap can waste about 15 litres of water a day.
  • Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth.
  • Rather take a bath than a shower.
  • Use your dishwasher/clothes washer for only full loads.
  • Use the water you used to wash your car/clothes and water the garden.
