And the record is Keegan’s!
Keegan Longueira has officially broken the Guinness World Record for the fastest bicycle trip from Cairo to Cape Town.
The previous record held by Dutchman, Robert Knol was smashed by 10 days by this young man from eMalahleni. Cairo to Cape Town in 59 days!
“It’s a dream come true,” said Keegan, who has since matriculating from St Benedict’s College Bedfordview, always loved the thought of doing something more in life.
Keegan arrived at the V&A Waterfront on May 2 after being on the road for exactly 59 Days eight hours and 30 minutes. The journey took him across eight countries, from the northern to the southern hemisphere.
From being held at knifepoint in Egypt to dodging ‘Bandit Highway’ terrorists in northern Kenya, Keegan has been through a lot on the road to Cape Town.
Keegan left Cairo on January 2 and cycled south as quickly as he could. A tough spell of injuries and trip threatening infections on his inner leg in the first five days nearly put his dream of bringing the record home to Africa to rest. But miraculous healing after a forced rest day in Aswan did him the world of good. After that, there was no looking back. At that stage, well behind record pace, Keegan put his ears back and pushed himself to the limit.
“The 300km the day after my rest day was tough, I have never ever gone so far and so long on a bike, gritting my teeth all day, keeping that dream in the back of my mind,” he said.
Kenya seems to stand out most in the mind of the adventurer who loved the people’s hospitality and the incredible views.
On average Keegan managed 175km a day with the hottest temperature he faced being 43°C between Pandamatenga and Nata in Botswana. Throughout the trip he had two punctures on the same wheel, and his greatest distance covered in one day was 300km, his shortest was a mere 77km – his fastest speed recorded was 79km/h travelling down a pass in Ethiopia.
Some of his favourite food was an Ethiopian dish – Tibs and Njera (a goat meat dish). His trip saw him recover from fever, infection and diarrhoea which lasted nine days after he ate off chicken.
Currently Mark Beaumont is on the road in attempt to beat Keegan’s record. “Mark is one of my heroes, I watched his documentaries as a kid, cycling the world and the America’s, it inspired me to go on the road and attempt these adventures,” said Keegan.
So what does this young ambitious and never-back-down man have in store next?
That is the question on everyone’s minds, visit Keegan’s website to see what he has in store as he prepares to launch himself into his next expedition of a completely different nature, facing situations he has never faced before.

All the best to you Keegan ‘Kunjani’ Longueira.
