A woman opened a case of rape at Witbank Police Station claiming to have been raped on May 23. At about 07:30 the woman was walking on her way to work when she was approached by three men.
According to her statement they grabbed hold of the woman and carried her off into the nearby bushes. One of the suspects drew a firearm and held the woman at gunpoint while the other began stripping her. The third suspect undressed himself and raped her.
The three suspects then allegedly beat the woman and ran away.
Sgt Thembi Thabethe, working at the family violence and sexual offences unit (FCS) of Witbank Police was handling the case and received information from the rape victim that one of the suspects resided in Duvha Park.
Sgt Thabethe headed to where the suspect was believed to be staying, in hopes of making the arrest. When she confronted and attempted to arrest the man she was overpowered.
The suspect was able to disarm Sgt Thabethe, gaining possession of her firearm, she managed to escape and ran as the suspect fired off four rounds in her direction.
In her escape Sgt Thabethe fell to the floor and injured her thigh, fortunately she was unscathed by the bullets. In the time the suspect fled, keeping the sergeant’s firearm, a Z88.
The community is advised to be on the lookout for the stolen gun.
“The suspect is currently at large, we appeal to the community for any information regarding the three rape suspects and the whereabouts of the stolen state firearm, to come forward and assist police in the investigation by contacting the branch commander of the detective services, Col Raymond Talmakies on 071 575 8583,” said Capt Eddie Hall, Witbank Police communications officer.
An internal investigation is currently underway to ascertain why Sgt Thabethe did not follow protocol, attending the complaint and attempting the arrest unaccompanied by a fellow officer.
“Members generally work in pairs to ensure the safety of one another and of the community,” said Capt Hall.
Sgt Thabethe was booked off from the service for two days following the traumatic incident that took place on May 24.
