On May 29 at about 22:00 the driver of a bakkie had a break down near the N4 toll plaza heading towards Middelburg. The driver and his colleague inspected the problem and found a leaking radiator. While the two men waited next to the road for help, they were approached by three men.
They initially thought the men were there to help, but then they saw that two of them were carrying pangas, and the third man was pointing a firearm at the shocked driver. They demanded the driver’s bank card and also threatened him to divulge his pin code. The two victims had to surrender their cell phones as well. One of the robbers who were carrying a panga took the cash from their wallet, which was a couple of thousand rand in total.
The driver saw an opening and managed to make a run for it. He escaped the robbers and immediately went for help. When he returned a short while later with the authorities, the vehicle was completely vandalised. The windows were broken among other damage that the robbers caused. His colleague was unharmed, but the suspects had made their escape before the driver could return with the police in tow.
The suspects are unknown but an investigation is being conducted.
