Watch: Family devastated as good Samaritan drowns

A 25-year-old man drowned after he offered to help an elderly man get his vehicle out of Witbank Dam.

On Wednesday morning, June 24 an elderly man from Masakhane went down to the river leading into Witbank Dam with his bakkie, where he normally pumps water from.
When he was busy the bakkie rolled into the dam and there was no way of stopping it.
The bakkie carried on rolling into the dam and eventually came to a stop in the middle of the river.

With no way of getting the bakkie out of the water,  the 25-year-old man also living in Masakhane offered to swim in and tie a rope to the bakkie.
He climbed in the freezing cold water and swam towards the bakkie and then he drowned.
It’s still unclear what caused him to drowned, police divers were called to the scene.

A family member cried when his body was brought towards the river edge.

A diver went in towards the bakkie, where his body was found by the vehicle.
He was pulled out and brought to the river edge as his family members and other members of the community watched.
