Brian is paralysed

“Rest in peace my buddy!! Your legacy will be with me forever. Miss you so bad… and will always love you bud!”

These grief stricken words come from Brian Boynton who is paralysed after an accident that claimed the life of his best friend, Donovan Roberts.

Brian (33) is recovering in Life Westville Hospital in Durban after the horrific accident occurred on June 14, just a few kilometres outside Pongola.

Brian had undergone surgery on Tuesday, June 21 and it was found that his injuries are far more serious than they initially thought.

Brian broke every vertebra in his back, except the 13^th one.

Doctors used the word ‘miracle’.

“We do believe in miracles. Where there is hope there is faith. Where there is faith there is miracles and God promises us miracles if we believe,” Brian’s mom Ms Sonja Roux said.

Ms Roux said physiotherapist are busy with Brian and plans to put him in a wheelchair for a little while so that he can sit.

“He is doing much better,  the road to recovery is still a long and painful one with lots of  physiotherapy. He is doing a lot of exercises to get his upper body strong. Brian is in good spirit and he is already making plans for when he is discharged,” Ms Roux said.

The fact that Brian is loved by so many is evident by the fundraising initiatives his friends are undertaking.

Pitstop Sportsbar in Ga-Nala held a fun golf day for Brian on June 25. They called it ‘Play it in the rough’.

“We played golf in the field opposite the bar. This was a golf day with a huge difference. We targeted some with paintball guns, we sprayed hair, had fun and everyone did it out of love for Brian,” said Ms Petro Rogers from Pitstop Sportsbar.

They raised R43 234 for Brian.

“We thank each and everyone who made this possible, especially Jimmy Baton and Mervyn Lauff who made most of the arrangements for the day. Also to all the sponsors, thank you, you made a difference. We love you Brian,” Ms Rogers said.

Ms Vlooi Boynton wrote the following message to her husband on Facebook “I admire your strength, courage, and determination to have dealt with everything you did, during what was, undoubtedly, the worst time of your life. So many people would have given up, I know I would have. But not you….you fought! I am so proud to know you, you are a hero, and you will continue to be one for years to come.”

Donovan’s family said goodbye to him on June 22.

Jeanine Roberts, Donovan’s future wife said, “Rest in peace Liefie I know you are with your dad we will all be together one day again and until then I promise to be the best mother I can be to our beautiful kids.”
