Battle against ‘silent killers’ continue

Three arrests, one of which involved a policeman from the Royal Swaziland Police Service, were made.

The police are not giving up on their fight against drugs.

Women in blue showed that they are a force not to be reckoned with when they arrested a constable from Swaziland and his two accomplices on August 11.
The policewomen were busy with ‘Operation Basadi’ when they stopped the trio at a road block at the weigh bridge in Hendrina.

During the search, the policewomen found three brown parcels containing compressed dagga to an estimated street value of R33 630.

The suspects were on their way to eMalahleni.
The suspects appeared before the Hendrina Magistrate’s Court on August 12 facing a charge of possession of dagga.
Witbank SAPS also showed no tolerance towards the use or possession of illegal substances.
They kicked off a very successful week when they made two arrests on August 9. A 22-year old man was arrested at a shopping centre in Klipfontein with what was believed to be dagga in his possession.
Later the same afternoon a 35-year old man was arrested at a local taxi rank in Haig Street. He also allegedly had drugs in his possession.

On August 12 police searched a group of men sitting under a tree in Klipfontein. They allegedly found dagga in a 46-year old man’s possession.
The police wrapped up the weekend when they were busy with a crime prevention initiative and noticed a suspicious looking man also in Klipfontein.

‘Operation Basadi’ executed by the women in blue in the province as part of the activities which are conducted to celebrate Women’s Month, is making tremendous strides in the fight against crime. Policewomen arrested a constable from Swaziland and his two accomplices on August 11 for possession of dagga.

They searched the man and allegedly also found drugs in his possession.
Mr Edison Gunda, acting director at the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA) said he gives the police a standing ovation for these successes.

Gunda said the fast forward button was pressed as drug use is escalating at an alarming rate.
In May they saw 118 new patients come into the centre. In June they worked hand in hand with the Department of Education and the staff at a local high school and tested learners there. This initiative saw 418 new cases walk through the doors at the centre.

In July 143 new patients knocked on the door for help.

“Our doors are open and we invite schools and companies to come and discuss initiatives to fight drugs. We need partners in this battle,” Gunda said.
