Woman throws stones at rapist

A domestic worker was allegedly raped as she was walking trying to find transport to take her home.

A domestic worker was allegedly raped as she was walking trying to find transport to take her home.
The incident occurred on Saturday, August 13 when the domestic worker arrived for her duties at 11:00 in Tasbet Park.

When she knocked off work at 17:00, she walked to the garage on the corner of Kiepersol and Springbok Street to catch a mini bus home.

After waiting a while in the road, no mini bus taxis passed and she decided to walk towards the mall to get a mini bus there.

As she crossed the N12 highway she noticed two unknown men walking in the long grass.
She alleged that she got a strange feeling about the two unknown men; she then changed the direction of her route.
All of a sudden she looked around and noticed that one of the men started following her. He then stopped her and tried to speak to her.

She noticed that the other suspect was walking in the bushes a couple of meters away.
The woman then bent down and picked up a few stones, she allegedly started throwing the stones at the men. The men chased after her and pushed her to the ground.

As the 48-year-old woman lay on the ground, both men allegedly raped her in the bushes.
Feeling drained and an emotional wreck after what just happened in the bushes the woman got herself together and opened a case of rape at Witbank Police Station.

“About 150 women report being raped to the police daily in South Africa,” said Minster Jeff Radebe, from Statistics South Africa.

Fewer than 30 of the cases will be prosecuted, and no more than 10 will result in a conviction.
According to the Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust website, South Africa has one of the highest incidences of rape in the world. Twelve times more women are raped and then murdered in South Africa every year than in the United States. Gang rape is also common, with some victims raped by up to 30 perpetrators at a time.

Factors such as poverty and drug abuse on their own are not enough to explain these shocking statistics.
The National Victims of Crime Survey results show that the proportion of rape victims who report their victimisation to the police decreased by 21% between 2011 and 2014.
