After years and years of letters addressed to the Emalahleni City Council regarding speed bumps in Sagittarius Street a car went through a house last week.

On Thursday, September 27 a white Ranger bakkie came down Sagittarius Street and its alleged that the driver missed the turn at the bottom of the road and went straight into a house on the corner.

“The whole garage has to be rebuilt, the extent of the damage done to the house was R53 000, R17 000 to the motorbike, R50 000 to the bakkie and R15 000 for the tools,” said Mr Willem Booysen home owner.

The accident that occurred in Sagittarius Street on Thursday, September 27 when a white Ranger bakkie collided into a house.

It’s alleged that the driver of the bakkie never had a driver’s licence and he tried to run away from the scene, but the garden service team from across the road stopped him in his tracks and he had to wait there until Witbank 911 arrived on scene. He was then complaining that he was hurt and was taken away.

“It’s not the first time someone has come through my wall, it happened a couple of years ago as well,” continued Booysen.

Members of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) Sector 3 Subsector 7 have been requesting since 2012 for speed bumps to be placed in Sagittarius Street and a few other streets in the area.

“The last letter was sent in the beginning of this year,” said Mr Nico Kotze radio coordinator for the area.

Here is just an extract of the letter sent to the council by the CPF chairman.

“We have for some time observed the flow of traffic in our area as well as the behaviour of motorists and found that; motorists are speeding in most streets carrying high traffic volumes, their careless driving behaviour creates a mayor risk to members of the community and other road uses, they are ill disciplined and do not obey the rules of the road and traffic police is non exciting in our neighbourhood.”

According to Kotze there is no road signs indicating a 90 degree turn at the bottom of the road.

An email was sent to Mr Theo van Vuuren, Municipal Manager of Emalahleni City Council regarding the speed bumps in the area and comment from him is still pending.
