Kriel Police arrested a mother after she allegedly abandoned her new born son in a field near Rietspruit Farm.

The boy’s cries were heard by field workers who found him on October 12, the Kriel Police were immediately notified of the finding.

Police arrived at the farm and took the infant boy, now dubbed Sakhile, meaning Future Leader, to Witbank Hospital where he was put under observation. Nurses took a liking to the little one and named him Lehlogonolo meaning Blessings.

Two days later police arrested the mother of the child on October 14, the 35-year-old mother was arrested at Abram Farm near Rietspruit, she spent the weekend in custody and appeared before the Kriel Magistrate Court facing the charge of negligence and child abuse.

The mother was granted bail at R500 on Monday and is set to appear before the Kriel Court on November 9 for trial.

“Lehlogonolo Sakhile, now seven-days-old, is healthy and blessed,” said Sgt Yster Shabangu, Kriel Communications Liaison.
