IEC sets record straight on Emalahleni voting results

Voter turnout figures in Mpumalanga counter false allegations over voting material integrity during local government.

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has refuted social media claims that election results in Wards 4 and 23 of the Emalahleni Local Municipality are being withheld because the number of ballots cast exceeded the number of registered voters.

The IEC issued a statement yesterday, November 6, during its update on the 2026 local government elections.

Turnout in the affected areas

According to the IEC, voter turnout in the cited wards is just over 50%, well below the registered voter population.

The IEC has urged the public to rely only on its official channels for election information, and to verify information before sharing it.

The IEC warned that spreading false information could constitute a breach of the Electoral Code of Conduct and the associated Disinformation Code.
