“I owned the car for 25 years, I have rebuilt it and kept it in mint condition,” recalls Mr Raphael Sibande, as he tells of how his car was stolen.
Sibande’s red Volkswagen Fox was stolen on April 25, from the undercover parking situated below the municipal gardens.
“The security came to me and told me that my car had just been driven out – and it wasn’t me,” said Sibande.
The security informed Sibande that a Ford Icon was seen driving behind his Volkswagen as it made its way up the ramp and out of the underground parking.
“The security knew who I was as I work at the municipality and we have gotten to know one another. I once forgot to close my window and the security came to me to let me know,” recalls Sibane, his voice saddened by the ordeal.

Mr Raphael Sibane’s Volkswagen Fox was stolen from the underground parking below the municipal gardens.
According to what the security told Sibande, a Ford Icon came to the underground parking and left, following his Volkswagen out of the parking area.
“It makes sense how they were able to operate as they came in with a car which wouldn’t raise suspicion, unlike if they came on foot,” said Sibande.
He added that he thinks one or maybe two of the suspects got out of the vehicle and managed to disable the security features on his car before driving it out of the parking lot.
“I am quite devastated by the theft, it violates your sense of security and trust – I don’t think I will ever see it again,” said Sibande, disheartened by the ordeal.
“The theft of the vehicle is a major concern to the municipality. There are security arrangements in place and there are security guards who patrol and monitor the parking area. We will investigate and since the matter has been reported to SAPS we will fully cooperate with their investigation,” said Mr Kingdom Mabuza, Emalahleni Municipality communications liaison.
