Woman sentenced to R500 fine or 30 days in prison

Furthermore, two women took the stand for shoplifting.

A couple of illegal immigrant cases were on the roll at the Witbank Magistrate Court.

On Thursday, October 19, B Court benches and its corridor were full as the accused and their family members waited impatiently to hear the magistrate’s verdicts.

Two men were before court on a case of theft.

The accused pleaded guilty and were sentenced to six months imprisonment, suspended for five years.

The men were declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Anthony Molala was arrested for being an illegal immigrant.

He told the court that he had no passport. Molala, who speaks the Ndau language (Zimbabwe), chose to conduct his own defence.

He will remain in custody until his next appearance on Thursday, October 26 for a plea.

Another similar case was of Rodriguez Mabunda who faced charges of being an illegal immigrant.

On the day of his appearance he applied to have a legal aid lawyer represent him.

The state prosecutor mentioned that the Xitsonga (Mozambique) speaking man has no passport.

His case was postponed to October 26, where until then he will remain in custody.

An additional illegal immigrant case heard in court was also postponed to October 26.

Furthermore, two women took the stand for shoplifting.

The first suspect who is charged with shoplifting at Shoprite had no previous or pending matters against her.

The accused denied shoplifting and in the same breath said she did not pay for the goods taken at the shop.

The second suspect paid R2000 bail at her previous appearance and her bail money was extended until the next court appearance. Both their cases were postponed to Friday, November 17.

Nandi Mngoma was another person in custody due to a permit that expired. The accused, aged 26, pleaded guilty to the charge against her.

She was arrested on Thursday, October 12. Mngoma is a married woman and a mother of four children.

In a statement read by her lawyer she said she was remorseful of her actions in breaking the law.

Even though her permit has expired, her passport is still valid and will expire in 2022.

In the sentencing the magistrate considered that she is a first time offender, Mngoma was sentenced to a R500 fine or 30 days in prison.
