Only R100 will make a huge difference

Ms Esterhuizen said that operational costs at White Rose Hospice are astronomical.

What will R100 buy you today?

For R100 you will get 6.68 litres of petrol. With that same R100 note you can buy a loaf of bread for R12, two litres of milk for R26, a 1kg tub of margarine for R34.99, a dozen eggs for R23 and maybe get some change. Or that same R100 note can make a difference in someone else’s life.

White Rose Hospice is in desperate need of funds.

Ms Phindile Shongwe loves spending time with her son, Leon, at White Rose Hospice.

“If we can get 1000 people to each commit to give R100 a month, we will have R100 000 to cover our costs,” said a very hopeful Ms Magda Esterhuizen, the Director at White Rose Hospice.

Ms Esterhuizen said that operational costs at White Rose Hospice are astronomical.

“Our operational costs are R250 000 per month. We barely meet that amount. I am afraid that this Hospice will have to close its doors if we don’t get help soon,” Ms Esterhuizen said.

Mr Gerrie Joubert’s eyes light up when he gets a visit from White Rose Hospice director, Ms Magda Esterhuizen.

White Rose Hospice opened their doors in 2002, when a gap in the medical sector was identified. There was a major need for basic general nursing care for the terminally ill of eMalahleni. It is the only Hospice with an in-patient unit.

Ms Esterhuizen paused for a moment at the bedside of one of their younger patients.

Leon Mabuza (21) was in a serious accident on May 2, 2016. He was on his way back from work when another car hit his car and he ended up in the intensive care unit. His mom, Ms Phindile Shongwe fed him patiently.

“This is my son,” she introduced Leon

“This boy of mine has made so much progress since he arrived here a year ago. Doctors never gave him a chance, but with the love and guidance of the staff here at White Rose Hospice there is a lot of improvement everyday. Look, Leon is swallowing,” she said excitedly.

Mr Hendrik Venter reads from his Bible every day. On Monday, December 11 he read from Psalm 62: Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from Him. Truly He is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will never be shaken.

“It is not over until God says it is over. My son will walk and give testimony of what he is going through,” the mother said.

Mr Gerrie Joubert (54) is laying in the next room. His eyes lit up when Ms Esterhuizen walked in. Gerrie can’t walk or talk.

Gerrie’s sister, Ms Magda Willemse said Gerrie has been there for the past five years.

“He loves it at White Rose Hospice,” Ms Willemse said.

“People don’t come here to die. We are dedicated to improving the quality of life of patients with life threatening illnesses,” Ms Esterhuizen said.

She thanks every donor for their generous monthly contributions,

“Without businesses and people like our donors we can not keep our doors open.”
