The R544 is a very dangerous playground

Motorists are warned to drive very carefully on the R544 between eMalahleni and Ga-Nala.

Motorists are warned to drive very carefully on the R544 between eMalahleni and Ga-Nala.

The stretch of road between Vandyksdrift and the old TNC Mine is extremely poor.

The road between Ga-nala and eMalahleni is riddled with potholes.

Many motorists have lost not one but two tyres and rims at once when driving through the potholes.

Ms Irene Landman said drivers cannot attempt to swerve out for the potholes as oncoming heavy vehicles pose danger.

“When the potholes fill up with rainwater it is even worse because you don’t see it,’ she said.

Ms Teressa Nxumalo said travelling to eMalahleni is a costly affair as there are new holes every week.
The owner of a local tow-in service, Mr Kobus van Loggerenberg, told WITBANK NEWS they attended a scene a month ago where a bakkie rolled because the driver had to swerve out for a pothole.

The road between Ga-nala and eMalahleni is riddled with potholes.

“There were two children in the bakkie with their dad. One of the little girls was flung out of the bakkie and landed in a ditch. The bakkie landed on the edge of the ditch. The little girl that was flung out hurt her arm badly. This accident could have been fatal for the family.”

WITBANK NEWS contacted the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport about the road used by hundreds of motorists each day.

Taking into consideration that the week kicked off on a public holiday and many institutions also kept their doors closed on Monday, WITBANK NEWS will publish the department’s response as soon as it is received.
