Having drugs in your possession is a serious crime and can surely land you in trouble with the police.

10 Suspects had to pay the price after they’ve been caught by officers on duty this past weekend, no mercy was shown and they’ve been arrested by Witbank SAPS.

“Testing positive for drugs can have many bad consequences, not only do drugs have a negative effect on your health but also on your reputation. If you are convicted of possession or dealing of drugs you will have a criminal record and you will be punished,” said Captain Eddie Hall from Witbank SAPS.

The nature of the punishment will depend on different things such as age, previous convictions and the seriousness of the offence.
Criminal records count very heavily against you when applying for a job, gun licence or even a Visa for travelling overseas.

Being caught with drugs in your possession or while using drugs, you will surely have to face the music.
Depending on the amount of drugs you are caught with, you can go to jail or receive a fine.

The term ‘drug dealing’ refers to the selling of illegal drugs on a smaller scale. The word ‘dealing’ then has a wider meaning in law terms; it can refer to, importing drugs, exporting drugs, distributing drugs, selling and manufacturing drugs or any illegal substances.

“If the police do find drugs on you, or catch you dealing, you will be arrested,” said Captain Hall firmly.

Recent reports from the South African Community Epidemiology Network on Drug Use (SACENDU) suggest that among our youth cannabis, alcohol, and tobacco are the most commonly abused substances.

If a person gives or sells harmful substances to someone, it could kill them and the dealer or giver may be found guilty of culpable homicide or even murder. If the person however survives, the dealer or giver might also be liable for civil claims to pay for the damage such as medical costs.

Always remember that it is illegal to abuse any substance, regardless of whether the substance itself is illegal or not.
Do not hesitate to contact your local police station if you are aware of illegal drug activities.
