A hijacking nearly claimed two lives, but with the assistance of members from the Witbank SAPS and SACCW (South African Community Crime Watch) a vehicle was recovered and two lives were saved.

The police were alerted of a hijacking in Hertzog Street on Friday, May 25.

This happened around 22:00 but what worsened the incident, was that two of the four occupants of the vehicle were shot and taken with the BMW, belonging to one of the victims. The driver was shot in his right upper leg and the passenger in his left ankle.

Members from Witbank SAPS attended the scene in Herzog Street. Police reported that four occupants were in the vehicle, but after the shooting the suspects allegedly forced the driver of the BMW and one passenger into the vehicle and drove off with the victims.

SAPS got the relevant information from the scene and Maureen Scheepers, SACCW Operations Co-ordinator supplied technical assistance.
Information was followed by Scheepers and SAPS, which led to finding the victims at Coronation. SAPS dispatched ambulances to the scene and a further search commenced to find the BMW.

“The vehicle was recovered around 45 minutes later in Thusanang,” said Scheepers.

No arrests were made and a case of attempted murder and hijacking was opened at the Witbank Police. The case is still under investigation.

The acting Police Commissioner Col Sipho Khumalo thanked all members involved for their inputs and assistance provided in finding the suspects and the vehicle.

“SACCW Witbank is proud to make its resources available for fighting crime in eMalahleni. These kind of successes could not be achieved if it was not for the great team work. Well done and thank you to everyone who attended to this case,” concluded Scheepers.
