Funda Mzantsi pre-assessment held at the correctional centre

Witbank Correctional Centre held its Funda Mzantsi pre-assessment recently.

The pre-assessment was held on Wednesday, August 22, for offenders in preparation for Funda Mzantsi championship finals to be held at Bethal Correctional Centre.

The offenders competed for the top positions in reading, book review, spelling and debate. The languages assessed were IsiZulu, SiSwati, IsiNdebele, Sepedi and English.

The topic for debate was: ‘Should universities and colleges offer free education?’

According to Ms Thabile Mahlangu communication manager at the centre, the impact that the organisers of the event wish this exercise could have is for people to find pleasure in reading, they should spend their spare time in the libraries.

This is very pivotal in the centres as offenders have ample time to read and this could be their way to a life of literacy.

Offenders entertained everyone by performing an educational drama and through music. African Bank gave messages of support to the offenders and sponsored gifts for the top ten winners after the assessments.

“These are but a few of many rehabilitation paths which the department is taking to ensure that the mandate of the department is fulfilled. With the assistance of the community, more and more offenders can be successfully rehabilitated,” said Ms Mahlangu.
