The mercury is hovering around 30°C this week

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, wear hats and follow WHO-backed precautions as high temperatures set in.

Take out that sunscreen, put on your hat and drink a lot of water.

A scorching hot week is expected across the region, with afternoon temperatures reaching up to 31°C by the weekend.

For the first part of the week, mild conditions in the morning will start at 16°C, with afternoons reaching a high of 30°C. From Friday into Sunday, the mercury creeps up to 31°C.

According to the SA Weather Service, there is only a 30% probability of rain from Friday into Sunday.

Tips to beat the heat

The World Health Organization provides the following tips to beat the heat:

• Drink enough water throughout the day and carry a refillable water bottle.
• Dark yellow urine may indicate that you are not drinking enough water.
• Opt for breathable, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothes and a hat to shield yourself from the sun.
• Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen regularly to protect your skin.
• Take breaks in shaded areas or air-conditioned spaces when possible.
• Watch for dizziness, nausea or confusion, and seek medical help if needed.
• Use wet towels or misting fans, or splash water on your face and arms to enhance thermal comfort.
• If you have a medical condition or take regular medication, check with your doctor.
