Three of South Africa’s robotic surgeons attended an advanced robotic masterclass at the world renowned ORSI academy in Belgium.

Three of South Africa’s robotic surgeons attended an advanced robotic masterclass at the world renowned ORSI academy in Belgium.

All three surgeons completed their initial robotic surgery training at the same center 4 years ago. Dr Wikus Vermeulen (Witbank), Dr Stephan van Vuuren (Cape Town) and Dr Conray Moolman (Cape Town) attended the masterclass that involved training with the world’s most experience robotic surgeons: Dr Vipul Patel (USA), Prof Alex Mottrie (Europe) and Prof Dmitry Pushkar (Russia).

The work consisted of lectures, video-sessions, live surgeries as well as surgery on cadavers with the latest platforms of the DaVinci robotic systems.

Robotic surgery is on the increase and becoming the preferred method of treatment of certain cancers.

South Africa has 5 DaVinci platforms currently: One in Pretoria, Midrand and Port Elizabeth each and two in Cape Town. Dr Vermeulen is one of twenty robotic surgeons and consults with Highveld Urology in Witbank and Middelburg but performs the robotic surgery at Netcare Waterfall City in Midrand’s robotic unit.
