The holiday season is quickly making its approach and December can be long and hot but before you go out on the dam with your boat, be sure to stick to these tips for a safe and enjoyable boat ride:
*Always wear a life jacket, even if you can swim, boating accidents can happen in the blink of an eye.
*Make sure that you designate a ‘water watcher’ this is an adult that keeps his/her eye on the person in the water at all times.
*Learn CPR and Basic Life Support courses. There are places in eMalahleni that will be happy to help you with this. You can do this with Legacy Emergency Specialists in eMalahleni. You can contact them on 061 960 911. You can also do a life support and CPR course with Langamed; you can contact them on 072 344 2344. These courses will also equip you with knowledge on how to safely help someone in distress; this can be very helpful on a boat.
*Make sure you and all the passengers on the boat adhere to a NO DRINKING policy while boating.
*Only allow someone with a skippers licence to steer the boat. Make sure that the skipper and the passengers know the rules of the water. There are operating rules for boats. Educate yourself and children about swimming safely and teach children how to float and swim.
*Make sure that your boat has all the necessary equipment and that everything is thoroughly tested before hitting the water. It is also a good idea to always have a basic first aid kit on board.
*And lastly always stay at a steady speed because as the saying goes “speed kills.”
