Community rallies around sick HTS pupil

Eugene is currently being treated at a private hospital because of the generosity of his community

Eugene, a grade 9 pupil of HTS Witbank, is suffering from ulcerative colitis, however – none of the drugs manufactured to treat this disease have agreed with young Eugene’s system.

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes long-lasting inflammation and ulcers (sores) in your digestive tract.

Ulcerative colitis affects the innermost lining of your large intestine.

Ulcerative colitis can be debilitating and can sometimes lead to life-threatening complications.

While it has no known cure, treatment can greatly reduce signs and symptoms of the disease and even bring about long-term remission.

The HTS pupil lost a considerable amount of blood after his intestines starting bleeding due to the disease’s effect on his weakened immune system.

Unfortunately the colitis spread into Eugene’s mouth; leaving him unable to eat or drink.

Within a few hours, Eugene had become dehydrated despite having already seen the doctor.

He remained unable to keep any food or water down, and was subsequently rushed to Life Cosmos’s Trauma / Emergency Unit where his pulse was found to be extremely high, whilst his breathing was quick and shallow.

Eugene was stabilised at Life Cosmos’s Trauma / Emergency Unit, where he immediately received an emergency unit of blood and was admitted to the hospital.

Eugene is currently undergoing a series of blood transfusions, and is being fed through intravenous feeding tubes.

Eugene is currently being treated at a private hospital because of the generosity of his community.
