He celebrated his birthday at his home in Hlalanikahle in Extension 2 on Saturday, January 4.

Reverend Black Elson Phiri came to South Africa in 1950 from Malawi and did not think that he would live and celebrate his 100 years birthday.

The father of three children, all girls and now staying with the only surviving daughter.

He celebrated his birthday at his home in Hlalanikahle in Extension 2 on Saturday, January 4.

He got married in 1965 and used to work at Delmas and came to eMalahleni in 1992, his wife has since passed away as well.

He is still strong and is able to do most things for himself.

“The secret to long life is prayers. I believe in prayers whether good or bad and I know that God will always answer my prayers. My message to the younger generation is to listen to their parents and respect every elderly person and stay away from evil things. I joined the Christian Zion Church (ZCC) in 1977 and I have never looked back, they have been very good to me,” emphasised Reverend Phiri.
