Potholes creating chaos in Reyno Ridge
The potholes in Gasel Avenue and Dixon Street are so big that drivers are driving on the sidewalks or the other side of the road just to get past them and avoid damaging their cars.
Potholes have been a very popular topic for years in eMalahleni due to that it feels like they are everywhere. In Reyno Ridge the potholes have been a problem for years, they seem to get covered up only to drive through new ones in a month. Ward 18 was cleaned up nicely last year before the ward elections.
But due to a lot of rainfall, some closed potholes did open up again and some new ones popped up.
The potholes in Gasel Avenue and Dixon Street are so big that drivers are driving on the sidewalks or the other side of the road just to get past them and avoid damaging their cars.

This is very dangerous for pedestrians walking on the side of the road and other vehicles coming from the front.
Hendrik Grobler, a resident from Gasel Avenue said: “I am tired of these potholes in Gasel Avenue, just a few meters from my house. I sit outside some nights and listen to how cars drive through these holes making them bigger and deeper. I think it is very weak that our local government is not able to act fast on such circumstances.”
Residents living in this area is frustrated and is asking a lot of questions.
Ward 18 Cllr Salomi Kriel said: “Firstly my role as Ward 18’s Councilor is to provide a bridge between our residents and the municipal council. Just as water problems, electricity problems are getting bigger so is the ongoing pothole problems. The issues in our ward are executed by the municipality’s council, according to a prioritised programme. With all the problems our community is facing, potholes have been on our priority list numerous times and will continue to be until the problem is solved.”
Cllr Salomi Kriel is on top of the problems in Ward 18 and is putting pressure on the municipality regarding the roads that are being neglected.
“Every month I have a meeting of the Ward Committee which has to happen in terms of the Municipal Systems Act. At these meetings we review our schedule of potholes, street lights out of order, parks needing maintenance and all other problems. The minutes of these meetings are forwarded to the municipality monthly, unfortunately we never get feedback from them,” she added.
