Former employees want their voices heard
The former employees of Glencore have demanded to see president Joseph Mathunjwa and again demanded that ‘their money’

Former employees of Glencore and AMCU members who were dismissed in 2013 for reasons related to their participation in various unprotected strikes, again protested outside AMCU’s Nkangala Regional Offices.
The protest took place on Thursday, April 8 when they marched from King George’s Park to the AMCU’s offices in Nicol Street.
The former employees of Glencore have demanded to see president Joseph Mathunjwa and again demanded that ‘their money’, which they believe to be due to them from Glencore be paid into their bank accounts and not to AMCU.
AMCU has comprehensively responded to the members’ demands in this regard on two previous occasions.
AMCU on behalf of the members, and backed by a full legal team (including senior and junior counsel), approached the Labour Court as far back as 2013, challenging the dismissal of the members.
The Judgement was handed down by the Labour Court on December 13, 2019.
Most recently, AMCU made an application for leave to appeal to the Constitutional Court against the judgement of the Labour Court in which the members’ dismissal was found to be fair.
The matter is still pending before the Constitutional Court and AMCU awaits the outcome thereof.
Insofar as the members contend that there are monies due to them by Glencore and that these monies have been paid to AMCU, AMCU records that this is factually incorrect – no outcome from the Constitutional Court has been received, the matter has not become settled between AMCU and Glencore, no amounts have been awarded to the members by the court as part of their unfair dismissal dispute against Glencore nor have any monies been paid by Glencore to AMCU in relation to these members and their unfair dismissal dispute against Glencore.
