Barry makes the spokes sing all the way to Mossel Bay
The best way to prepare for something like this is to get endurance hours into one’s legs.
Cycling from eMalahleni to Mossel Bay for a good cause is what Barry Crouch will be doing with two other cyclists from eMalahleni.
Barry along with Gert Nagel and Wihl Vermaak will be cycling the 1 450 km in less than a month. Barry started cycling back in 2012 when he was a university student.
“I was always an avid endurance runner with an eye on doing the Comrades. Eventually, I started cycling more and running less and that’s when the cycling bug bit me, and I’ve never looked back,” said Barry.
According to Barry, every day is a new experience on the bike; the places you see, the people you get to meet, and it’s something one cannot explain ‒ the pure pleasure of freeing your mind.
Gert told Barry about this cycling trip and that is when he immediately decided this will be a great adventure and life experience. “For a person to experience our beautiful country on two wheels can only be an absolute privilege,” Barry told the WITBANK NEWS.
Barry’s preparation for the trip is well underway.
“The best way to prepare for something like this is to get endurance hours into one’s legs and to do the long training hours that are required. One can expect to face all sorts of challenges on something that in itself is a challenge already. As each one arises, one must address them in a manner that will be best suited for that specific challenge, but I think, for me, the most challenging aspect will be the mental one; riding ± 200 km a day for seven days – which is something I have not done before.”
Barry and the two other cyclists hope to rise in the region of R100 000 for Rizpah, “I hope we can get more if possible”.
“To the residents of eMalahleni, I urge you to lend a helping hand to Rizpah Foundation, whether it’s big or small ‒ any sort of contribution will be an immense help and will be greatly appreciated as this does go a long way in helping the kids reach their potential and making their dreams come true,” Barry concluded.
