Witbank Dam is still above 90% full

All the sluice gates are currently closed.

Witbank Dam, which is the largest municipal dam in the Southern Hemisphere, is a landmark in the City of Coal.

The Witbank Dam has a huge surface area of over 1,200 hectares and can hold, when full, over 104 million cubic metres of water, because of its 3,500 square kilometre catchment area.

The dam wall itself is an impressive 42m high and 562m long, nestling between the rock faces of the nature reserves gorge.

On July 26 the dam was at 91.4% capacity.

According to the dam’s flood management, all the sluice gates are closed.
