Emalahleni city of no water –

No water is a norm in eMalahleni.

Residents are still facing an escalating water crisis.

The municipality’s ‘fragile’ water network is under severe strain as one pipe break after the other is reported.

Not a day goes by that a ward councilor is not inundated with queries about dry taps.

WITBANK NEWS reached out to the municipality, but by the time going to press no response was given about the state of the water network.

Since Thursday, September 9 water outages crippled the whole of eMalahleni.

On Thursday the water supply to Tasbet Park Ext 1, a portion of Ben Fleur, Reyno Ridge extensions, and Del Judor Ext 4 was affected due to a pipe break.

Model Park, Highveld Park, Die Heuwel extensions, Blancheville, Seekoeiwater, and Riverview suffered without water for three days because the municipality did not have the right coupling in stock.

On the same day, the water supply to KwaGuqa new extensions was affected due to a damaged bulk feeder line.

As the weekend went into full swing on Saturday, the water supply to the central business district, Witbank Ext 1 to 12, portions of Die Heuwel Proper, Die Heuwel Ext 8, Del Judor Ext 1, Del Judor Proper, Saveways, Witbank General Hospital, Emalahleni Private Hospital, and Life Cosmos Hospital were interrupted because Point B reservoir had to be isolated due to a pipe break and repairs.

On Monday, September 13 Jackaroo Park and portions of Blancheville were without water again.

Mr Clive Hatch, chairperson of the Democratic Alliance has been very vocal about Emalahleni’s water problems and has written to the Human Rights Commission on several occasions.

He is however not happy with their response.

He said it has been six months and there have still been no findings from the SAHRC.

“The provision of water is a fundamental human right which I regret to say that they do not seem to regard it serious when it applies to Emalahleni,” Hatch said.

WITBANK NEWS still awaits feedback from the SAHRC.
