Not a drop of water for three consecutive days in parts of eMalahleni

Residents are fed up with the municipality’s poor service

Emalahleni’s water problems are getting worse. The last drop in the bucket is the three ‘dry’ days in Ward 20.

The water went off on Wednesday, September 8, and little has been done to resolve the problem.

The latest update received from the Emalahleni Local Municipality was at 22:26 on Thursday, September 9 when it was reported that a 400 to 400mm diameter reducing coupling needs to be ordered as they do not stock the coupling.

The coupling must be made because it is not a standard size.

No municipal water tanks were seen since the water went off.

Ward 20 is not the only ward that struggles with water.

Earlier this week the water supply to Tasbet Park Ext 1, Ben Fleur, Reyno Ridge extensions, and Del Judor Ext 4 was affected due to pipe breaks. The repairs will hopefully be done today.

The water supply to KwaGuqa new extensions was affected due to a damaged bulk feeder line and repairs are underway.

It seems that the municipality’s water infrastructure is finally crumbling.

The shortage of water in eMalahleni has been problematical for over 10 years despite the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) finding in 2013 that the Emalahleni Local Municipality ‘violated the rights of the residents in that it has failed/neglected to take reasonable steps to provide the residents with sufficient and clean water’.

“Thus far in 2021 not a day has passed that one part or another of this town has been without water – more often than not for days on end, even up to eight days in certain areas. Yet the local municipality seems willing or able to find a solution to the problem,” said Mr Clive Hatch, chairperson of the Democratic Alliance.
