Ten beauties just waiting for a forever family

The SPCA calls on everyone to have their cats and dogs sterilised.

Witbank SPCA’s shelters are overflowing. September and October have been exceptionally shocking.

Since October 4 the SPCA has taken in 63 cats and 54 dogs, and they have not even reached the month end yet.

Last week Ms Liz Oberholzer, a volunteer at the SPCA said they had a really bad week.

“Perhaps it is because we are nearing the end of a hard year, maybe it is because we are emotionally drained. There is no more strength left in the tank. Every last piece of happiness has been drained from us. We say goodbye to far too many four-legged children. Some we knew for a while and some we haven’t gotten the time to get to know yet. But all of these new angels going over the rainbow bridge knew that they were loved till the end. We are so sorry babies but at least we know you have a new home called heaven.”

You might feel shocked and disgusted at this statement, but the SPCA has just done the dirty work for all of those who don’t care.

“On occasion, we can help the broken become whole again. Sometimes we can’t. We do have those happy moments when all the hard work pays off when a once broken soul leaves through our doors with the most amazing future ahead of them. That is the day we know we won one small battle. But have so many more battles ahead of us.”

Next time you read the stats, remember that those decisions were not made easily. There is thought and emotion that goes into each and every decision to put a dog or cat down.

The SPCA calls on everyone to have their cats and dogs sterilised. Be responsible owners. Don’t say it is too expensive. The vets that perform that operation have studied hard to earn their degrees. They too have a tough job.

Contrary to popular belief, SPCA does not have any onsite vet staff or clinic. All veterinary related questions and treatments must be discussed with qualified vet staff – meaning the private vets or the state vet.

The SPCA urges the public to visit them and share their adoption album on Facebook.

Currently, the SPCA is in short supply of some essential items:

  • Cat litter
  • Litter boxes
  • Kitten food – for the small babies
  • Puppy food
