Tasbet traffic light accident – brothers doing fine

The identity of the man who died in the accident is being withheld until he has formally been identified.

Widespread outrage is mounting within the community following a fatal accident at the Tasbet Park traffic light on Wednesday night.

Residents are demanding answers and want to know what immediate action will be taken to regulate the heavy trucks dominating local roads.

This follows the accident wherein a father lost his life when a truck slammed into his car, pushing it through a concrete wall, where it eventually came to a stop just metres away from a house.

Emergency workers had to race against time to extricate two boys, aged seven and nine, who were trapped inside the twisted metal.

Sighs of relief and prayers broke through the night when the first boy was moved to safety, where paramedics from Legacy Emergency Medical Services tended to him.
He immediately asked if his brother was okay.

Inside the wreck, Dino Padayachee from Langamed Emergency Management, with the help of other paramedics and the Emalahleni Fire Department, gently cut away the metal and freed the second boy.
This little one also got the thumbs up from paramedics before the two boys were rushed to hospital for treatment.
Gavin Cooper from Legacy said the boys were doing fine.

An eyewitness told Witbank News that she “froze” the moment she saw the truck hit the car.

“I was on my way home and stopped at the red robot. The truck came from Springbok Street, and the driver wanted to turn left onto Bethal Road. I suspect the traffic light was already orange. He could not manage to turn safely and hit a truck standing in the middle of the road before he veered into the oncoming traffic and crashed into the car,” she said.

Mosa Justice Senooane also saw the accident happen.

“The robots had just turned green. I was next to the car that got hit. I was going down towards Tasbet 3, and that car was in the turning lane headed towards the N12 side. We were driving from the Spar side. As our robot turned green, I zoomed downhill. Before I could even pass the robots on the other side, a truck driving from the N12 side towards the Duvha Park side came in at high speed. I am assuming he was already coming in hot, and the robot went red on the driver at the last second. Then, from my rearview mirror, I saw the car that was next to me get hit. I made a U-turn to see what happened after. There was a secondary truck parked between the left and right lane on the Duvha road towards the N12 side. After the collision, the truck drove into another truck that was parked in between the two lanes, and the front was flattened. Then, the car and the truck crossed the lane into a backyard on Mopane Street.”

Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the accident.
The owner of the company whose truck was involved in the crash said they wish to share their condolences to the family of the deceased.

He added the driver of the truck is still shocked, but coping.
