Life Orientation lesson gets practical

Pine Ridge Secondary School teacher takes a step to encourage learners so that they dream bigger.

Miss Noxolo Mhlongo brought a fun and exciting way of learning to her students at Pine Ridge Secondary School.

The Grade 11 and 12 life orientation teacher organised a mini-workshop lesson for her students where they could learn more about Gender-Based Violence (GBV), get career guidance and learn more about sex education.

Mhlongo also asked a few organisations to come and encourage learners as it is vital for their future.

The lesson was held at the school on Wednesday, November 3 and the grade 11 learners were eager to have this lesson.

Miss Mhlongo, who has been teaching at the school since 2016 noticed that a lot of the children lacked career guidance as some had no plans of furthering their studies after completing matric.

This made her realise that she had to take a step to encourage them and also inspire them to dream bigger.

Cebile Ndwandwe, who works at the Education Development Centre heard of the plan that Miss Mhlongo had and wanted to get involved in the wonderful project.

Other organisations such as Mother2Mother, Family Health International (FHI) 360 and Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (WRHI) also came to teach the learners.

The learners had also prepared an act that highlighted different forms of GBV, stereotypes and other social ills that they might be facing in their neighbourhood.

This act opened the eyes of many learners as they saw that men can be victims of abuse too and the LGBTQI+ community is also affected.

“I have noticed that the learners have learned from this lesson as they are also starting to respect the teachers who are a part of the LGBTQI community. I hope that they also practice this at home. I want to encourage other teachers, especially those teaching Life Orientation to go the extra mile and teach their learners such lessons,” added Miss Mhlongo.
