Drastic life changes after graduation
TUT eMalahleni graduates need help to get employment.
Graduates from the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) recently gathered to discuss employment and business opportunities.
TUT graduates established a graduate structure in 2017 to assist graduates in finding employment.
Graduates held a street fundraiser where they sold items and had their CV’s and business plans while wearing their graduation gowns.
Sibusiso Mamakwa, a former structure chairperson stated that one of the goals of the structure’s creation was to assist those without a driver’s license, create employment and business opportunities, and assist with outstanding fees.
At the meeting, Junior Bongane Mhlanga, an ICT software development graduate, opened the meeting by saying, “After academic struggle, we face the corporate world struggle. Unemployment is on the rise, and many people are struggling after graduation,” he added.
During the meeting, the former structure chairman went on to deliver the report on the things that they previously did.
He said in their last graduate structure licence project they had helped about five people to get learner’s permits in 2020, and the total number of people they assisted was around 45, with a goal of 200 people per year.
A total of 15 people received assistance in obtaining a driver’s licence.
In terms of job opportunities, they helped about 12 people to find work at different companies.
“We have gathered as a group of young people who want to help each other and open opportunities for one another,” Sibusiso said.
Approximately 11 graduate’s names were written down during the meeting to be assisted in obtaining a learner’s permit.
They also stated that they are still negotiating with companies about funding and job opportunities since the previous companies do not longer fund them due to Covid-19.
“We must all start somewhere,” he added.
During the meeting, the graduates also stated that they will accept any job that comes their way.
