Road deaths this past weekend still being finalised
MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison urges motorists to drive with caution, especially in rainy weather.
Road users that were travelling this past Easter weekend were urged to be cautious while driving in severe weather.
On Sunday, April 17 the Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe confirmed that 13 road deaths were reported and appealed to motorists to use the road with greater caution in this wet weather while travelling back home.
“We appealed to drivers to keep headlights on when driving in the rain, increase following distances and also avoid excessive speeding. They should further adjust their driving to various prevailing conditions on the road,” said Shongwe.
Further on he advised motorists to avoid crossing low lying bridges as this poses danger to them.
“We continuously reminded the road users to obey the rules,” he added.
According to the MEC, he was pleased to say that they are truly happy with the cooperation among stakeholders.
“I have noted the positive impact that law enforcement visibility across most roads in the province is having on road safety despite fatal crashes recorded so far in the province,” Shongwe added.
On Monday, April 18 the number of deaths was 13 and a total of 43 accidents were reported.
“This includes the four people who perished on the N17 toll road crash that occurred at the beginning of the weekend, on Friday, April 15. This increased cooperation from motorists, this number could be reduced as compared to last year’s Easter holiday road accidents,” Shongwe added.
Before going to print the total number of the death toll this past Easter Holiday was not yet finalised as all the information was still being gathered.
“As soon as we have the final report, we will make it public to all,” Mr Moeti Mmusi, Communication Officer of Mpumalanga DCSSL concluded.
