Lying under oath makes you guilty of a crime

Don’t lie to the police. It will land you in hot water.

“You will be arrested for perjury if you open a police case or file an affidavit, and it turns out you are not telling the truth,” warned local police communications officer Captain Eddie Hall.

Hall said perjury is not a joke, as one resident found out.

The man opened a case at Witbank Police Station and claimed that his house was robbed earlier in May and his television stolen.

When police interviewed witnesses, it came to light that there was no robbery.

Witnesses told police that the man was allegedly confronted by a prostitute and her pimp after he would not pay for a joyful night with the prostitute.

He apparently gave the prostitute his television and laptop as payment.

“In South African law, perjury cases can be prosecuted against anyone who lays a criminal charge, opens a police case or files an affidavit claiming that a crime has taken place. The catch comes in when it is not the truth,” Hall said.
