eMalahleni has its own exceptional runner

Sipho has committed to waving the Mpumalanga flag as he prepares for the Comrades Marathon, which will be his first participation in that race.

Sipho Hlumbane, also known as ‘Mbulawa’, recently won the KwaZulu-Natal Capital City Marathon 2022 in the master’s category.

He finished the race over 42.2 km and also qualified to participate in the Comrades Marathon.

Sipho (51) is an Ackerville resident who is tenacious in his pursuits.

He is a long-time runner who has accomplished much in his running career and still wishes to continue for a long time.

His passion for running started at school during the athletics, “I competed against older people. I ran 3 000 meters, which is eight rounds, and won the race,” he says.

This encouraged him to pursue a career in running.

“My medals would fill an 80 kg bag,” he explained.

One of the highlights of his career is the trophy he received in 2021 in the 5 km race at a location sponsored by Glencore. He competes in 10 km events to ultra marathons.

He has progressed with the support of his family and coach. Sipho also mentioned that Peace Sibanyoni encouraged him, and introduced him to bigger races.

Sipho has committed to waving the Mpumalanga flag as he prepares for the Comrades Marathon, which will be his first participation in that race.

“I promise the people of Mpumalanga that there is a lot I’m willing to do in the race. I still need help in the form of sponsors.”

As part of his preparation for the Comrades Marathon, he will participate in the Ice Breaker, which will be held in eMalahleni and the Mzimkhulu Pietermaritzburg Marathon.

“I’d like to thank everyone who is supporting; please keep it up,” he concluded.

He is pleading for someone to assist him in getting new running shoes, and if you have helpful hints for him, please contact him on 071 117 8048.
