Striking it with pen and words
Writer Strike Mnguni will be honoured at the fifth AfriCAN Annual Global Honoree Authors’ Awards
Born and bred in Mhluzi in Middelburg and educated in eMalahleni, Strike Mnguni was a former student at Zacheus Malaza Secondary School from 1995 and matriculated in 1997.
Mnguni discovered his gift for writing and made a few bucks by writing love propositions and letters for those students seeking love and relationships and apologetic letters for those who have wronged their partners.

“I made fairly good earnings during my high school days by selling those letters.
At that time, cellphones were not like what we see today and letters were doing what cellphones are doing today,” Mnguni said.
He has been nominated three times in the fifth AfriCAN Annual Global Honoree Authors’ Awards.
The Annual Global Honoree Authors sits as a panel between February and June each year to read, assess, evaluate and score each book submitted from all the African countries and winners are anonymously and suitably selected and chosen for every book genre by the commission panel.

The book ‘Life ‒ A sea of glees and woes’ was dedicated to varsity and college students’ lifestyles, trials and temptations, without their parents to protect them. Both novels ‘Home Sweet Home’ and ‘Victim to Victor’ are dedicated to GBV (Gender-Based Violence), breaking the silence and stigma against the high rate of domestic violence against women and children.
The awards will be held at the Genesis on Fairmount Shopping Centre. Anthea Thyssen, the founder and host of the fifth AfriCAN Annual Global Honoree Authors’ Awards 2022 is honouring 150 authors on the continent this year on July 31 on her birthday in Johannesburg.
For the past two years of Covid-19, she has done it through a ‘drive-thru’ handover.
Thyssen is a self-published author, and she knows the struggles of ordinary authors on the ground. She has honoured 463 authors so far on the continent.
The AfriCAN Honoree Authors’ Awards is not a competition, it is a platform where she honours ordinary people that were brave enough to “PEN” their stories.

The theme for 2022 is “UNLOCK the TRUTH in Africa.” ‒ The “PEN Warriors in Africa” ®.
All the authors that will be honoured in 2022 have contributed to the Conscious Authorship Initiative which supported the Spekboom Tree where authors are honouring the EARTH. Anthea is an EARTHizen and believes that citizens need to be responsible in their actions to preserve the planet. Authors write on paper which comes from trees.
One author, one book and one Spekboom Tree at a time. In 2022, we have seen war and that is why the theme befits this season that authors on the continent will become “PEN Warriors”, the new war will be fought with the PEN and words!
