A netball tournament was hosted in celebration of Women’s Day at the Lynnville netball court on Tuesday, August 9.

“We normally host this tournament to get the children off the streets and away from substance abuse, as well as for girls to avoid teenage pregnancy, and today we are celebrating Women’s Day,” Duduzile Mahema, Kasi football and netball management said.

The action-packed netball kick-off began early in the morning with nine teams from around eMalahleni.

When Caddies took Future Stones to the court for the tournament finals, fans could say, “May the best team win”.

Caddies first step onto the court were screaming for a win, continuing their outstanding performance after defeating Future Stars in the semi-finals.

After Future Stones have defeated Caddies by a narrow margin of 16-11 in the finals, the question became, “Where did Caddies go wrong?’’.

As Caddies dominated the first round, Future Stones were still looking forward to winning the game as they fought to claim the victory after scoring four goals with a one-goal advantage over Caddies in the first round.

As the game progressed, Future Stones accepted the challenge because touch was a move regardless of all the defending from their opponents.

With the determination of both teams and their eager players, it was too obvious that it was the finals.

Future Stone demonstrated their ability to handle any competition by putting significant pressure on their opponents. As the game went on, the game became more complex and difficult, with Slindokuhle Mabuza, the centre of the Future Stones, giving it her all when receiving the ball and ensuring it went straight to the scoring area, and Caddies defending.

With Caddies goal shooter, Nomfundo Masango telling her own story when she got on the goal line by not missing a single scoring opportunity, but she didn’t score enough for her team to win the tournament.

Caddies player Thembelihle Mashiyane was left in tears after being the defender of the tournament.

Thandeka Sibanyoni was nominated for the best court and Jessica Manala was nominated for goalscorer of the tournament.

Anna Tshehla, coach of Caddies said, “It wasn’t easy for them from the start, with most of the tournament we were losing, but now we have improved, and I don’t believe this time around we have made it to the finals. Even though we didn’t win, I’m pleased that my girls represented me well in this Women’s Day tournament. To win, I believe we must all begin somewhere”.

Nkululeko Skhosana, coach of Future Stones, said “It’s an incredible honour to have won such a tournament, and I still can’t believe we did it, despite the pressure we were under from the team we were playing against”.
