MPU Youth Choir sings with Drakies

Mpumalanga Youth Choir belt out sterling performance.

Members of the Mpumalanga Youth Choir (MYC) had quite a busy time behind them, attending a workshop in the Drakensberg and performing at a choral celebration in Pretoria ‒ all in four days.

Conductor of the Mpumalanga Youth Choir, Mr André Oosthuizen.

MYC was the only choir invited to join the Drakensberg Boys Choir at a three-day workshop from August 18 to 20.

“Members learnt about several aspects and final preparations before performances during the workshop,” said the conductor, Mr André Oosthuizen.

Forty-three members attended the workshop.

On the third day of the tour, the first Founders Concert in the school’s existence was held with 20 pioneer Drakie Old Boys attending. Both the Old Boys and the audience were treated to an exhilarating concert, which included three moving pieces by MYC.

At the end of the performance, the Old Boys and MYC joined the Drakies on stage for a rousing rendition of Shosholoza.

Straight after the tour, the choir was on the road again to perform at the Choral Celebrations on August 21 at the NG Church in Lynnwood, Pretoria.

Several Pretoria-based choirs as well as local school choir from Hoërskool Patriot were part of the celebration performances.

“Although our performances are done for the year, we are looking forward to the World Choir Games. The Games will take place in Korea next year July and MYC would like to attend,” said Mr Oosthuizen.

The cost of going to the Games totals about R30 000 per member ‒ “We have a project where we will try and get people to sponsor a child for R1 000 per month which will be contributing to the costs,” explained Mr Oosthuizen.

In the meantime 90 aspiring choir members were invited to attend a camp from October 1 to 5 where the selection of new choir members will take place.
