Mandela’s sewage causes a big stink in Modelpark

Smelling sewer means somewhere a drain is overflowing again.

Emalahleni’s sewerage infrastructure is not the best. Recurring sewerage problems have been reported daily.

Residents are accusing Emalahleni Local Municipality of dragging their feet in attending complaints.

“You complain, and you receive a message that the issue has been reported, and yet nothing is done,” said Ms Aggie Sithole.

She had to walk through the stinky mess to get to her lift home.

Ward 24’s ward councillor, Clr Gavin Gates, said the first word he heard about the sewerage problem is when WITBANK NEWS reached out to him for comment.

He said he will immediately report the problem and see to it that it gets the necessary attention.

“I urge residents to please report any municipal issues on one of our seven ward WhatsApp groups. As soon as it comes to my attention, I can report it and see that it gets fixed.”

The municipal spokesperson Mr Lebo Mofokeng said the major causes of blockages could be avoided if people stop treating their toilets and drains as trash bins.

“Residents should start disposing of items used daily properly instead of flushing them down the toilet,” Mofokeng said.
