Suspected ATM bombing in Vosman foiled
Police stopped alleged robbers from blowing up an automatic teller machine in Vosman yesterday.
Ten suspected bank robbers were arrested after police pounded on a house in Vosman following up on some leads.
The suspects are facing charges of being in possession of unlicensed firearms with ammunition as well as illegal possession of explosives.
The joint operation put a lid on the alleged robbers’ plans on Wednesday, October 26.
It is believed they wanted to target an automatic teller machine in Vosman.
Two R5 rifles, a 9mm pistol, ammunition as well as explosives were seized during the arrest.
“At about 01:30 police moved to a certain house. Outside the house was a white Ford Ranger with Gauteng registration number plates with nine occupants inside. A search was conducted and that is when the firearms and ammunition were found. On further observations the astute members noticed that the serial numbers on the rifles were filed off,” said Colonel Donald Mdhluli, Mpumalanga SAPS spokesperson.
The other suspect was found inside the house with stained bank notes in his possession.
Explosives were also found in a black bag inside one of the bedrooms and various chemicals.
Police are yet to determine whether the chemicals were used to clean the stained banknotes.
Police said the suspects could possibly be linked to other crimes committed elsewhere.
