Two grade 11 students from Hoërskool Generaal Hertzog made a big splash at the recent prize-giving ceremony after being selected to play for the provincial netball team a few months earlier.

In July they competed in the Telkom Junior Netball Championship (TNC 2022), where Owami Nkosi and Makomborero Betsva earned the Defender of the Tournament honors.

On Wednesday, October 26, they returned to win lots of awards for the Sports and Culture event.

Betsva takes home six awards, including Senior Sports Girl of the Year, Athlete of the Year, Best Senior Middle Distance Athlete, Best Senior Cross Country Girl, Netball Honors, and Best Netball Defender.

Nkosi was awarded three awards: Netball Provincial Colors/Honors, Athletic Colors, and a trophy for best netball defender.

Jessica Betsva, Makom’s mother, stated, “I’m so proud of Makomborero’s determination and hard work. I thank God for this wonderful gift he has given my daughter. I’m completely overwhelmed”.

Violet Mashaba, Owami’s mother affirmed that making it this far has always been her daughter’s dream since she was a child.

“I wish she could advance and keep making the most of her netball journey and play as far as internationals,” she said.
