The Elkana Educational Centre has been working hard to develop and hone the learning skills development in children with special needs.

The school currently has 66 special needs learners with five grades: Pre-junior class, junior class, intermediate class, pre-senior class, and senior class.

The evening kicked off with the managing director, Abie Smit, thanking all the parents and learners for the year and the support thus far.

He also thanked the students for their dedication and hard work during the year and especially made it clear how grateful he is for the teachers who help these students on a daily basis and the hard work it contains.

He also boasted about the low teacher turnover, making it clear that the educators at Elkana Centre are in it for the long haul and are very dedicated.

On Friday, November 18, the school hosted a merit award followed by a ‘Jesus is born’ concert.

Each learner has excelled in specific areas and got awarded a certificate.

The parents of these students were very supportive and praised each and every award given.

One parent could be heard shouting ‘that’s my boy!’ with pride.

The school principal, Stacey Jansen said that in other schools they honor the best students in their fields whether it is academics, sports, or arts. “What we do at Elkana is that once every year we award each and every student. They are slow learners, but there is progress and we award them for that progress. Two learners out of each class also get a trophy that progressed more than expected,” Stacey said.
