The bridge in Second Street is good to go as it gets a thumbs up from the mayor
After six years the bridge in Second Street was officially opened by the Executive Mayor of Emalahleni Clr Conny Nkalitshana.
Six years ago the bridge on Second Street became a casualty during a storm.
It was swept away in March 2016 and a gaping hole ‘smiled’ at motorists that had to find an alternative route to take them to their destination.
“The municipality engaged communities and affected stakeholders to reinstate the bridge through consolidation of ideas and resources. A service provider was appointed and the works ensued in earnest to ensure mobility and accessibility to residential areas, community, and economic facilities,” said municipal spokesperson Mr Lebo Mofokeng who himself walked across the bridge early on December 23.
He said the bridge will provide much relief for the communities and businesses as there had been many struggles with access, especially during rainy seasons.
The bridge was officially handed over to the municipality and the Executive Mayor of Emalahleni, Conny Nkalitshana thanked all the role players, including the ward councillor, Clr Maureen Scheepers for their efforts in making this project a success.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Technical Services, Ms Busi Hlambane said the opening of the bridge was a very proud moment for her.
“We prioritised this project and today we can stand back and say well done,” Hlambane said.
Scheepers said road markings and road signs will soon follow.
“Additional items the likes of a pedestrian walkway are also on the agenda for early next year,” Scheepers said.
