Mpumi Mtsweni returns to eMalahleni for prayer service
The artist said being part of such a cause meant everything to her as she is a staunch advocate against gender-based violence and the abuse of women.
Gospel powerhouse Mpumi Mtsweni returned to her hometown last week to perform at a special prayer service hosted by eMalahleni Local Municipality Speaker Nombuso Shabangu.
The 35-year-old Spirit of Praise star, born and bred in the City of Coal, said being invited back home on October 21 to support a cause that also takes a stand against gender-based violence (GBV) meant everything to her.
“When the speaker called, I decided to drop everything and come support the movement because I’m against GBV,” she said. “I’m against women being killed, and I’m against women being abused. We are praying for peace.”
Mtsweni said performing at home was a fulfilling and emotional moment for her, as she had previously felt her own people had forgotten about her.
“Performing in eMalahleni is always fulfilling because I know what the audience wants. I understand my people because I grew up here,” Mtsweni said.

“I also appreciate the fact that they recognise Mpumi Mtsweni as an artist from eMalahleni and that they continue to show their love for me – that means so much to me.”
The artist said she is currently working on her upcoming album, titled Mpumi Mtsweni and Sisters, which will be released soon. She expressed hope of securing support from the community of eMalahleni.
“I hope my hometown will support me because I’ve been recording, incorporating elements from eMalahleni. I don’t forget where I come from,” she said.
To aspiring artists, Mtsweni advised them to keep pushing until they succeed.
“For everyone who is performing on stage, we see you, we love you, and our prayers are with you,” the artist said. “Keep pushing. I pushed until it happened, and I pray that you guys hang in there and never forget God.”
