‘Learn not to litter’ ‒ learners must learn as rubbish embraces school
The school bell just rang to announce the beginning of the new school year when the rubbish around Alex Mampana School was cleared up.
The ward councillor in Ward 15 declared ‘war’ against rubbish.
Clr Happy Mokwana got the entrance to Alex Mapane School in Klarinet Ext 3 and cleaned up after community members raised a concern about the state of the school’s entrance.
Community members spoke out about the situation and said the school’s entrance is used as a rubbish bin.
“Everyone stops here and dumps their rubbish,” said Ms Maria Sithole.
She said they try to keep it clean, but the rubbish is just piling up.
Refuse collection in the area is also not a regular occurrence.
“If we are lucky, we see a refuse truck, but the municipal workers do not pick up the rubbish lying around if it is not in refuse bags. So we have paper, bottles and even dead dogs rotting ‘decorating’ the entrance to the school.”
Diseases can easily spread, and this unsanitary place is the perfect breeding ‘facility’ for germs.
If a disease spreads in a school, it can affect the whole community.
A study done previously showed that a cluttered learning environment can affect the ability of the students to learn.
“Teachers can lose focus too, because of the visual clutter surrounding them,” Academic Gates found.
The community is relieved that the cleanup happened so quickly and said Clr Mokwana is a councillor they can count on.
