Witbank Flying Squad members were attacked whilst on duty by unknown suspects who opened fire on them at the N12 around eMalahleni on Sunday.

One of the policemen was shot.

Police in Barberton managed to apprehend one of the suspects who is believed to have attacked the police.

According to Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, provincial police spokesperson the police spotted a White Hyundai bakkie without registration plates.

When police stopped the bakkie to conduct routine checks at around 01:30 the driver could not comply with the police officials’ instructions.

“Police proceeded to persuade the suspicious vehicle, which finally came to a halt at Sheba Street,” said Mohlala.

It is alleged that the suspects started shooting at the police which led the police to return fire that resulted in some of the occupants fleeing the scene on foot.

The suspect was taken to the police station for further investigation.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela praised the members for their bravery and the arrest of the suspect.

The general however voiced concerns about the escalating unacceptable attack on police in the province.
