The suspect was arrested immediately after she performed an illegal transaction with a homeowner.

An employee of Emalahleni Local Municipality has been arrested by SAPS Middelburg and Secunda Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team.

The suspect who is employed as an information officer responsible for communicating with various stakeholders and government departments relating to housing issues, was arrested yesterday (May 7).

Following the acquisition of mining rights by a mine, residents living around eMalahleni are to be relocated to Duvha where they will be built new residences.

The suspect, armed with this information devised a cunning plan to allegedly defraud unsuspecting homeowners into paying an amount of money with a promise of being prioritised in the housing project.

The operation was executed wherein the suspect was arrested immediately after a transaction where an agent was allegedly allocated a house.

The suspect is to appear in the Magistrates Court this morning (May 8) on charges of fraud and corruption.
