Vosman Police are urging scrap metal dealers to strictly adhere to the law and abstain from accepting illicit goods. 

This caution follows a recent surprise visit to various outlets, during which police discovered burnt copper cables at a scrap metal dealer in Ackerville on Thursday, July 20. 

The outlet’s manager is believed to have failed to provide a valid explanation for the possession of the cables, leading to an immediate fine for violating the Second-hand Goods Act, No 6 of 2009 and section 32 (1)(9) read with section 25(4)(b).

The aforementioned laws pertain to the acquisition or disposal of controlled metal cables without reasonable justification or permission from the seller.

Additionally, the dealer neglected to report the transaction to the local police station.

Consequently, the police seized the cables, valued at R27 510.

During the operation, law enforcement officials also spotted a Hyundai H100 bakkie, which has been impounded pending further investigation.

The vehicle’s documentation allegedly did not match the particulars of the vehicle, prompting an in-depth examination.

Emphasising the crucial role scrap metal dealers play in combating crime, the police have urged them to conduct their businesses lawfully.

Dealers are advised to promptly notify the authorities if suspicious goods are presented to their establishments.

“The spot checks by police to scrap metal merchants will continue and those found negating the law, will have to face the consequences,” said Vosman Spokesperson Captain Elizabeth Hlathi.
